Spain and Asia: harnessing trade, soft power and the EU in the Asia-Pacific Century, Ramón Pacheco Pardo (Elcano, Spain)

Since the first framework plan for the Asia-Pacific region in 2000, three Asia-Pacific plans have established Madrid’s strategic stance. Spain’s main goals are to boost trade and investment links, use its soft power to improve relations and to make use of its EU and NATO membership to maximise benefits and become more involved in the main geostrategic issues. Yet this process requires economic support and greater diplomatic backing for EU and NATO initiatives in the region.
