In his thought-provoking pamphlet Richard Bassett, a former Times journalist and military historian, argues persuasively that economic and political factors are putting the question of European military integration firmly back on the agenda of the European Union. The pamphlet takes particular issue with those in the United Kingdom who claim that such military integration is both impossible and undesirable. The author believes on the contrary that the United Kingdom now has an important opportunity to increase its power and influence in the world by leading and shaping the emerging military integration of the European Union.
