16th Ukraine Breakfast Debate: “Energy for Europe: Which role does Ukraine play in European energy security?” (IEP, Germany)

The last Ukraine Breakfast Debate of the year within our project GURN took place on 28 November 2019.

The current gas transit contract between Russia and Ukraine expires this year. Although Ukraine and Russia – under mediation of the European Commission – have been negotiating a new contract, no replacement treaty has been signed yet. At the same time, Ukraine is in the midst of energy sector reforms which include alignment to EU-regulations and the unbundling of Naftogaz. This raises new questions: How could the trilateral negotiations on a new transit agreement be more successful? What are the main results of the lawsuits between Russia and Ukraine and how do they influence the trilateral gas negotiations? These and other questions were discussed at our 16th Ukraine Breakfast Debate with Alyona Osmolovskaya, Press Officer of Naftogaz (Kiev), Dr Olena Pavlenko, Director of DiXi Group (Kiev) and Dr Thomas O’Donnell, Lecturer at the Hertie School of Governance (Berlin). A detailed report will follow shortly on our website.
