“Whose technology? Whose interests? Power and influence in the digital age”
WEASA is a summer offer of two-week classes addressed to experts – such as analysts, political advisors, think thank and NGO employees, civil servants, and journalists – coming from Eastern Partnership, Western Balkans countries and Poland. Due to restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and in the interest of the safety of participants and staff, the 2021 edition of the academy will take place in an online format.
WEASA 2021 will look into several topics, including:
- Content moderation, neutrality, and big tech;
- 5G, security, and geopolitics;
- Financial systems, cryptocurrency, and sovereignty;
- Online social movements, radicalization, and authoritarian responses;
- Anatomy of a journalistic investigation;
- Pandemic disinformation;
- Open source investigations;
- Digital security;
- Digital Transatlantic rift.
WEASA offers more than only lectures – participants can take part in practical workshops conducted by experts from all over the world and informal debates allowing experience sharing. Once the WEASA program is completed, participants are eligible to continue to take part in the alumni network – which provides opportunities to further education, meet and network with alumni from previous editions and assist in future WEASA editions.
Eligibility
WEASA 2021 is addressed to persons who are simultaneously citizens of and/or residents in one of the Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine), the Western Balkans (Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Bosnia & Herzegovina), and Poland.
WEASA participants are typically people who meet the following criteria:
- They are mid-career professionals, typically with at least five years of professional experience, ideally in a field related to the topic of WEASA;
- They work as policy analysts, experts, advisers, civil servants, journalists, private sector specialists and in NGOs;
- They are interested in the European integration, state transformation processes, transatlantic cooperation, cybersecurity, journalism, and digital media.
WEASA lectures will all be designed with a non-technical audience in mind – you do not need to be a digital expert in order to apply!
