A new enlargement strategy has been reshaped in 2020, putting emphasis on both political criteria and strict conditionality as priorities. It provides time for the EU to be stronger and more solid “before it can be bigger”, while also giving space for the Western Balkans to push for the necessary reforms. At the same time, the world continues to face unprecedented uncertainty due to COVID-19. Montenegro is facing a sharp GDP decline.
It is becoming clear that we are living in unmeasurable times, and that it will take years to rebuild and recover from economic devastation, restore both jobs and growth. At the same time, the newly elected government has to ensure the further democratization of society, the more extensive implementation of the rule of law, and combat corruption and organized crime.
On November 3 at 11:00 CET, TEPSA hosted a debate on “Enlargement Solidarity”. The talk, moderated by Danijela Jaćimović, Professor in the Faculty of Economics at the University of Montenegro, brought together four expert speakers:
- Nikola Milović, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, University of Montenegro,
- Oana-Cristina Popa, EU Ambassador and Head of EU Delegation to Montenegro,
- Jakov Milatović, Minister of Economic Development,
- Andrea Sabatini, Finance Manager, Trans European Policy Studies Association (TEPSA).
