The EU will soon be called upon to decide on the economic measures targeting trade exchanges with Russia, triggered by Moscow’s annexation of Crimea and due to expire on 31 July 2020. While the measures are likely to be renewed, their mere reiteration is no longer satisfactory in terms of policy effectiveness. More imaginative and effective approaches are needed by the EU while not compromising on its values.
