The Federal Trust’s Senior Research Fellow Dr Andrew Blick argues that the concessions that the UK enjoys as an EU – such as its opt-outs from the Schengen area and from the single currency – were made partly in the hope of reducing the risk that the UK might one day leave. In the negotiations it is carrying out now, the UK no longer has the leverage that the need to ensure its continued participation provided.
