The Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA) is an independent research institute operating in connection with the Finnish Parliament. Our mission is to produce high quality, topical information on international relations, the international economy, the European Union and Finnish foreign policy. The Institute realizes its aims by conducting research as well as by organizing domestic and international seminars and publishing reports on its research and current international issues.
FIIA is recruiting a Senior Research Fellow or Research Professor for its Global Security Research Programme. The position is filled at Senior Research Fellow or Research professor level, depending on the credentials and accomplishments of the selected candidate. Based on the profiles of the applicants, they retain the right to determine which set of skills/expertise is seen as most valuable for FIIA. They invite applications in the following broad thematic area that will complement their current fields of expertise:
- China’s foreign and security policy, its domestic and regional drivers, and implications for East Asia and the world. Research foci can include, but are not limited to, the domestic context of China’s and other East Asian states’ foreign policy; China’s increasing influence in East Asia and beyond; regional responses to China’s rise and comparisons to other regional and global actors; China’s stance towards global governance and international organizations; trade relations, connectivity strategies, digital agenda and economic policies; and global implications of growing competition with other great powers in Asia.
The appointment will take effect in May 2022 at the earliest and will run until the end of 2025 in line with the completion of the next three-year programme period (2023-2025). An extension of the appointment can be considered after the expiration of the first fixed term.
The applicants on the Senior Research Fellow level should hold a Doctoral degree. The Research Professor should hold the highest degree appropriate to the discipline and should fulfill the requirements for a professorship in the Academia (i.e., record of having acted as Professor, Habilitation, Title of Docent, etc.). They should have made notable contributions to research well beyond what is expected from an established senior researcher. Research Professors are also expected to obtain external research funding through grants and contracts to support their research teams. Applicants in both categories should have demonstrated their competence through previous academic and public activities. Demonstrated ability to use Chinese-language, and/or other East Asian-language sources in research is strongly recommended. They accept educational qualifications and relevant working experience acquired in Finland or abroad. Excellent communication skills in English (the working language of the Institute) are required. In view of the frequent Finnish media requests to FIIA researchers, knowledge of Finnish or Swedish will be considered an additional valuable asset. Also teamworking skills as well as the availability to travel abroad will be highly valued.
The application should be written in English and include a cover letter, CV, publication list and a research plan comprising a maximum of five (5) pages. The research proposal should outline the research intended to be undertaken during the appointment period. It should introduce the key themes and research questions, theories and methods to be employed, the timetable, as well as dissemination and networking strategies. Ongoing and planned research collaboration/projects should also be mentioned.
The application documents should be sent to the FIIA either by e-mail (kirjaamo[at]fiia.fi) or by mail (The Finnish Institute of International Affairs, P.O. Box 425, 00101 Helsinki, Finland). The application must reach us no later than 1 April 2022 at 16:15 local Finnish time (EET). Applications received after this time will not be considered.
