Prof. Christopher Hill will analyse the challenges that Brexit poses to British foreign policy-makers and institutions and to the future of UK-EU relations in the context of foreign, security and defence policy. It is evident that regardless of the outcome of the Brexit negotiations, EU member states will remain essential partners of the UK, given the number of common interests and shared security concerns. However, once outside the EU, the UK might well appear as a less attractive foreign policy partner–including for the United States. So as not to undermine its capacity to promote and pursue British interests globally, the UK will need to remain an influential voice within the wider multilateral system but this will not be easy.
