Since the 1990s, the Republic of China (Taiwan) has been one of Asia’s most vibrant and competitive democracies. The People’s Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan’s antagonistic neighbor on the western side of the Taiwan Strait has, however, been an unescapable factor in most of the island’s democratic elections that have taken place.
