Post-Brexit Europe: Lessons from the EEA (PELEEA) – Start-up of a new Jean Monnet Project (IIA, Iceland)

On 23-24 January 2018 a new Jean Monnet Project, “Post-Brexit Europe: Lessons from the EEA (PELEEA)”, led by the Institute of International Affairs was kick-started. This project is a Jean Monnet Activity funded by the EU‘s Erasmus+ programme. It is led by the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Iceland working in close collaboration with Dr. Julie Elizabeth Smith from University of Cambridge, Professor John Erik Fossum from Arena Centre for European Studies in Oslo, and Christian Frommelt at the Liechtenstein-Institut. The start –up was hosted by ARENA – Centre for European Studies in Oslo, who organized an open event attended by over 200 participants in Oslo. This was followed by a closed workshop where participants discussed what lessons could be drawn from the EEA agreement for the UK’s future relationship with the EU. This project will host three more workshops, in Liechtenstein, Cambridge and Iceland. Short policy recommendations will be published following each workshop and at the end of the project the partnership will publish a book that explores what it takes to make a successful association agreement.
