In order to avoid a looming deep crisis in Europe, the European Union has to counter several challenges at the same time, such as Russia’s war on Ukraine, geopolitical tensions, inflation, energy dependency, climate change or demographic developments. With regard to the EU’s strategic agenda, the author of this Policy Brief argues that a better understanding of the medium- and long-term developments ahead is necessary. In addition, he illustrates the need for a comprehensive understanding of the various interacting elements of the global polycrisis, analyses different perspectives for the EU’s policy orientation and offers policy recommendations.
