Brexit has provoked reflection in the European Union about the future of the bloc. If the economic consequences of the change remain in contention, the consequences of Brexit on European defense cooperation remain obscure. The problem originates in the fact that few clear definitions exist of the exact notion of European defense. To what extent, therefore, do Brexit, European defense, and the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP) constitute a ‘triangle of incompatibility’? This article will demonstrate that Brexit risks causing a deterioration of CSDP or European defense cooperation writ-large.
